So what *is* AB2M, anyway?

AB2M is my Amateur Radio callsign.  It is an identifier, issued to me by the Federal Communications Commission, that I use when operating on one of my various radios.  Amateur Radio is a unique hobby and service shared by millions of people around the world who use radio technology for fun, experimentation, and public service.   Some of the things that Amateur Radio operators enjoy are:

Simplex operation - talking from radio to radio - from the next room to the next town, county, or state!

Repeater operation - using a repeater station to extend your communications over several to hundreds of miles.

Distant communications ("DX") - talking from hundreds to thousands of miles away, to almost any country in the world.

Mobile & Portable operation - doing any/all of the above while in your car or with a handheld radio!

Packet - digital data communications over radio

Moonbounce - bouncing a signal OFF THE MOON to other operators

Satellite operation - communications via amateur built satellites

Emergency Communications - using Amateur Radio to provide communications support in times of emergency

Public Service Communications - using Amateur Radio to provide communications in the public interest; usually in support of a large activity such as a marathon, walkathon, etc.  This mainly involves a communications net for emergency health purposes, but can also include logisitcs (Where is the lead runner, so that we can position water?  Where is the tail walker, so the police can open the roads?)
